- A water tower is a simple device that uses gravity to provide water pressure.
- They provide water for domestic uses and fire supply.
- Most municipalities have tanks that can hold a day’s worth of water for their population.
- Many New York City buildings exceed the height the infrastructure’s water pressure can handle.
- Most structures taller than six stories need some sort of water tower and pump system of their own.
- Water is fed to buildings through pipes in the basement.
- Electric pumps push the water from the basement to roof.
- It takes 2-3 hours to fill the average 10,000-gallon tank.
- From the roof, gravity sends water to pipes throughout the building.
- As tenants use the water, the level in the tank goes down and, just like in a toilet, a ballcock lets more in.

My images are an extension of my whimsical approach to life bringing more color, light and humor into the world. My process has evolved organically and my work has taken on its own signature style which has been a happy accident. My goal...

Beth -- an unusual take on NYC. Years ago I lived in a penthouse on E. 66st (that's when I was a billionaire). I could see these things all around me. Great catch on your part. BTW -- I see you commented re The Subway Inn. Also one of my old haunts! L/F
Beth Ferris Sale replied:
Thanks Bill I just love the water towers of NYC. Ahhhh yes the iconic Subway Inn. I'm sure we crossed paths in the 80's. I too was in the restaurant biz and bartended in NYC for years but it certainly did not bring me billions!
Betsy Zimmerli
I like the treatment, Beth. Really fits the image. f/l

Thank you Betsy I appreciate the feedback. It's fun to enhance an image to bring out the character.

Thank you Paul....I love the looks I get when photographing walls, water towers, etc, and things and places people pass unnoticed every day.
